The Ipu Fund – Water & Sanitation Venture Philanthropy is a revolving philanthropic fund focused on water and sanitation. The goal of the fund is to bring together social investors to support impact businesses and/or social organizations that develop solutions for this cause by offering financial resources (donation and/or funding) through patient capital, as well as a customized acceleration. The financial gains obtained by the Fund are successively reinvested in other organizations - which makes it a revolving fund; thus creating financial sustainability for the initiative and increasing the long-term impact.

The origin of the name

As a genuinely Brazilian fund, the name Ipu was inspired by the indigenous culture. Ipu, in Tupi-Guarani language, means the "place where the floodplain water begins and runs adjacent to the mountains."

The name is a good definition of our goals: promotion and expansion of basic sanitation, and offering quality water to all Brazilian citizens", thus contributing to its universalization as well as benefiting not only businesses, but society as a whole.

What is Venture Philanthropy

Image

Venture Philanthropy is the application of Venture Capital principles for philanthropic purposes, in order to provide social institutions with financial, technical, and management resources.

In order to achieve this goal, considering that the social investment process is similar to the financial investment process, some skills are required, such as budget management and entrepreneurship, focused on obtaining results that sustain the project maintenance.

Goals

1. Enabling access to and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all;

2. Improving water quality, increasing its safe reuse, and reducing pollution and the volume of untreated effluents;

3. Protect and restore water-related ecosystems to promote water security.
